Referring to Mr. May's Despatches
Nos. 123 and 200 of the 21st. March and 11th. May, 1904, I
have the honour to transmit for your information eight
copies of the Report of the Harbour Master for the year
1904, which includes Summaries of Chinese Emigration and
Immigration Statistics.

As compared with 1903 there was
a total increase of 714,180 tons of shipping entering and
clearing. In ships other than junks there was a large
addition of 1,741 of 2,155,798 tons (comprising 1,389 River
Steamers of 1,225,498 tons) under the British flag, and
a decrease of 1,308 of 1,946,897 tons under foreign flags.
The decrease was mostly in Japanese Steamers, of which the
tonnage was 902,312 less in the year under review than in
1903. German shipping which ranks next to British shows
decreases in the tonnage of Steamers of 76,732 and 91,689
the figures from
tons as compared with 1903 and 1902 respectively.
